In this coming-of-age play called “Chemistry”, Danny, a middle school boy navigates the awkward yet amusing trials of adolescence, from classroom mishaps to budding friendships, as he discovers more about himself and the world around him.
DANNY: Dude, you won’t believe what happened in science class today. So, we’re doing this experiment, right? With beakers and stuff. And I’m thinking, ‘Cool, maybe we’ll make something explode.’ But no, we’re mixing colors or something. Lame.
Anyway, I’m partnered with Emily. Yeah, Emily with the crazy cool sneakers. She’s super smart. Like, she knows everything about science. So, I’m trying to act all chill, like I know what I’m doing. But inside, I’m freaking out because I can’t remember if blue and yellow make green or purple.
So, there we are, mixing stuff, and I accidentally knock over a beaker. Blue stuff everywhere! On the table, on my shoes, on Emily’s sneakers! I thought she’d be mad, but she just laughs. She actually laughs and says it’s like abstract art.
I couldn’t believe it. There I am, making a mess, and she thinks it’s cool. I mean, I always thought she was kind of out of my league, you know? But maybe, just maybe, she’s not. Or maybe she just really likes blue.
But the best part? After class, she asked me if I wanted to be partners for the next project. Me and Emily, lab partners. Dude, I might actually start liking science.
