In this monologue from the play, “From Her Shadow”, Claire resolves to break the cycle of her mother’s unpredictable love as she embarks on her own journey of motherhood with her newborn daughter.
CLAIRE: I know we don’t talk much. I guess I never know what to say. I loved you, but you didn’t treat me right. Not the way a mom’s supposed to treat her daughter. I wish you wouldn’t have taken your anger out on me. I wish we could have laughed more than cried. I wish you could meet my baby… but most of all, I hope I don’t turn out like you. I know I’m different. I know I understand more than you did. Sometimes I wonder if you really loved me, because I haven’t met my daughter yet, but I already know I’d do whatever it takes to make her happy. To support her. Can you say the same? I know I should forgive and move on. But you were my mom. You should’ve been there for me. You should’ve cared about more than yourself. I needed you. She needs me. And I won’t let her down.
