In this monologue from the play, “Hallway Whispers”, Max has a confession for Tessa. The play explores the burgeoning and tentative relationship between a shy, introspective boy and an outgoing girl, revealing how a chance encounter in the echoing corridors of high school leads to an unexpected and deep connection.
MAX: I don’t… get a long with most people. Most of the guys are d’uchebags. Most of the girls are just into themselves or their friends to even look my way. I’m not a pick-me guy who’s saying I’m not like the other guys. Maybe I’m just introverted, or watch too much anime, and I’ve been closed off for so long. Real interaction feels foreign. I’ve hid myself away, ya know? Trying to not get hurt. Because that’s what you get when you try to let someone in. Someone you might care about. (Beat) I don’t think I’ve ever had someone I could talk to like this. Feels kind of nice. You’re just easy to talk to, I guess. And if you still want to go to prom with Bill, I get it. You told me it’s not serious anyway. But I’d like to dance with you. And I hate dancing, if that tells you anything.
