In this monologue from the play “Over and Over”, Jenna, a young woman in her 20s-30s, confronts her boyfriend Paul over their rocky relationship.
JENNA: If there’s something you wanna say, just say it. You wanna break up with me, is that it? I know things haven’t been going well lately. But I thought we could work through it. Everyone thinks it’s easier to just give up, just start over with someone else. Well, guess what? You’ll be in this situation over and over if you just give up. If you never work through your problems. And I love you. I know… that might not be enough. But it’s a starting place. I don’t want to lose you. But it’s part of living in this damn city. Everyone thinks happiness is around the corner, not within themselves. So they keep chasing things, people, places, they think will make a difference. But no matter what they have, who they’re with, where they go, they end up feeling dissatisfied again. Not realizing that that old saying is true… wherever you go, there you are. I’m not going to beg. I’m not going to plead. But if you stay with me, we can work this out. And grow together, not apart. Either way, I… wish you well.
