In this monologue from the play, “The Accidental Activist”, Emily, a woman in her 30s, stands on a makeshift stage at an environmental protest rally, facing a large and enthusiastic crowd.
EMILY: Everyone, please, you need to hear me out. I’m not like you all! No, really! I was never supposed to be the face of this movement. These past few weeks have been incredible, and I’ve learned so much from all of you, but this… this was all a big misunderstanding. You see, I didn’t come here to join your protest. I came for coffee. Just coffee. I was just passing by, wearing this shirt. My “Be the Change” shirt. It was a gift, just a shirt with a nice message. I never thought… Then, Melissa – sweet Melissa, where are you? You saw my shirt, and in the heat of the moment, you shouted, “BE THE CHANGE!” And then, everyone started chanting. The energy was electric, and before I knew it, I was swept up in the moment. Cameras started flashing, microphones were suddenly in my face, and I… I just panicked. I didn’t know what to do, so I went along with it. But I didn’t understand the movement, not really. Not then. But here’s the thing. In these unexpected weeks as your accidental leader, I’ve seen your passion, your commitment to fighting climate change, to saving our planet. And it’s moved me. Deeply. I may have started as a coffee-seeking bystander in a catchy shirt, but I’m standing here now, fully aware and awake to the crisis we’re facing. I want to help, truly, but not as your leader. I’m just Emily, someone who cares, someone who wants to learn and contribute. I can’t promise much, but I can promise to pay attention to what I’m wearing in every situation from now on.
