In this monologue from the play, “The Provider”, Laura is in an interrogation room being questioned by the police.
LAURA: You see me as a criminal. A thief. A villain. But my family sees a provider, a role model. It’s not easy coming from where I did. How the hell could you understand? You came from money. I came from food stamps. I only steal enough to eat and provide for my kids. If you can’t understand that, then… well, it doesn’t matter now. You’re gonna lock me up for good, right? Punish me for the f’cked up society I was born into. Punish me for trying to do good. Yeah. I hope you have a clear conscience, I do. Because you’re taking away a mom from her kids. You’re stealing food from my babies’ mouths. You’re putting them in foster care. I can’t even look at someone who would do that. Who’s the real criminal? Cause it ain’t me.
