In this monologue from the play, “The Rose and the Oak Tree”, Evelyn is visited by her estranged daughter.
EVELYN: The wind is my friend, she whispers sweet nothings in my ear. Don’t look at me like that. I find more comfort in my garden than in the company of friends or a lover. The lilies, they understand me. They don’t spread rumors about me. The roses bloom tall and proud, reminding me to do the same. I’ve been alone so long I could swear they talk back to me. I sit by the oak tree and almost feel its branches hugging me. One by one my family, my friends, they all got swept up in life or death and I was left with this house. This place with so many memories. The plants are the only thing growing, changing, breathing. You say I’m losing my mind, I say I’m finally finding it. At least I’m still needed here. Plants need tending to. Daughters seem to resent that as they grow older. Don’t act like it’s not true. We can be frank after all this time. Now why are you really here?
