In this monologue from the play, “The Congressman”, Will tells Lucy about his plan to get out of debt.
WILL: I have to run for Congress, Lucy! I’m broke! What are you on about, “change the world”? I’m just trying to change my bank account. I don’t want to do politics, but it’s the family business. And if you asked me a year ago if I’d ever run, I’d have laughed your head off. But this is where I’m at. I’m gonna be evicted soon, I can’t make my car payments, I go into debt for my morning coffee! What do you want me to do, contribute to society? Get a real job? That’s not the Landon way. I’ll get my principles back when I can afford to. Right now, things are bad, and I have to do what I have to do. I’m sorry if this is cynical, it’s just the reality for me right now. Can you support that? Can you support me through this? We’ve been through so much together, and I don’t want to lose that just because I might have to become a… Congressman.
