In this monologue from the play, Along the Way, Ralph has a confession for Jessica on their first date.
RALPH: I love you. I know we just met, and I might sound crazy, but when you know, you know. How do I know? When we ordered ice cream. I know, it sounds dumb, but like, you ordered vanilla with sprinkles. Vanilla! The most boring flavor out there. But you were still the most interesting person I’d ever met. I could watch you order basic foods forever. Iceberg lettuce, no dressing. Tofu straight from the package. Heck, you could order dog food and I wouldn’t care. I’d smile and say, “That’s my Jessica!” And that’s how I know. Because it doesn’t matter. What matters is that I love you. And I’m too afraid to ask if you love me. It’s not exactly a good first date question. Some people say it’s moving too soon, but I say it’s not soon enough. If there’s love at first sight, why not at first bite? So, anyway… it’s okay if you don’t feel the same… but… do you?
