In this monologue from the play, “Artsy”, Tyler, a college student, defends his controversial art project to his skeptical professor, Darcy.
TYLER: What is art?! You think it belongs to the famous few? The Picasso’s? The Warhol’s? The Michelangelo’s? That’s bullsh’t. Art belongs to all of us.
It’s the elites like you who want to take it away, to take it off the streets and put it in a museum, put it in a museum you have to pay to get into. You want to serve hors d’œuvres and wine and a sense of superiority to the privileged few who can afford to see your art.
My art is for the masses. The people. The plumbers, the mechanics, the teachers.
Don’t they deserve art, too? Don’t they deserve to have beauty in their lives, too? Who are you to tell them they can’t?
So give me an ‘F’, fail me, flunk me, see if I care! Because I make art for the people. Not some pompous professor who thinks art belongs behind a paywall for the bourgeoisie.
