In this monologue from the play, “Camp Destiny”, Ralph, an overzealous camp counselor, gives a rousing speech for their upcoming (tug-of) War game.
RALPH: This, gentlemen… ladies… is WAR! Tug-of-war… but still! We are at the precipice of destiny. Right here, right now, you decide who you are. Weak, forgettable… losers? Or champions, forged in the fires of battle! Your hands will blister, your arms will ache, but I ask you—will you let go? WILL YOU?!
Not today. Not. On. My. Watch. If you came here to bond with everyone, to enjoy yourselves, to make lifelong friends… that’s cute. Very cute. But we here at Camp Destiny have a higher purpose. Beyond the admittedly cute activities like roasting marshmallows and making friendship bracelets… we seek glory. We seek victory. I want you to look at the person beside you. Go ahead, look at them. That person is your brother, your sister, your comrade in arms. You will fight for them as much as you fight for yourself. Their victory is your victory. And together, we will rise as a unit. We will crush the opposition. We will become legends of this camp—no, of life itself.
And when the dust settles, and they write the chronicles of Camp Destiny, they will not say we ‘played games.’ They will say we dominated games. We didn’t try. We conquered. So ask yourself one last time: Do you want to be remembered? Or do you want to fade into the background of mediocrity?
The rope is waiting. The battlefield is set. The question is—are you?
