In this scene from the play “Mismatched,” Emma, a free-spirited and slightly eccentric woman, and Brian, a serious, by-the-book accountant go on a blind date.
BRIAN: Emma? Brian. From the dating app.
EMMA: Ah, the elusive Brian! Have a seat! I got you a double espresso, seemed like your kind of drink.
BRIAN: That’s very… perceptive of you. Thanks.
EMMA: Yeah, your profile said you’re an accountant, right? I’m more of a green smoothie gal myself.
BRIAN: So, your profile said you’re into… astrology?
EMMA: Totally! I’m a Sagittarius, which means I’m super adventurous. You must be a Virgo, right? All orderly and accountant-y.
BRIAN: Accountant-y?
[BRIAN laughs, not realizing she’s made him uncomfortable.]
EMMA: So, tell me, Brian, what’s the wildest thing you’ve ever done?
BRIAN: Well, once, I filed my taxes on April 16th.
[EMMA looks stunned, then bursts into laughter.]
EMMA: Living on the edge, I see!
[BRIAN tries to laugh along but is clearly out of his element.]
BRIAN: And you? Any… wild… stories?
EMMA: Wild stories? Where do I start? Well, there was this one time I backpacked across Thailand…
BRIAN: Thailand?
EMMA: Yeah! I went there on a whim. Ended up at this full moon party on a beach. It was insane – fire dancers, drum circles, you name it. I even tried fire dancing myself.
BRIAN: Fire dancing? That sounds… dangerous.
EMMA: Oh, it was. But, you know, it’s not like I burned down the beach or anything. Just singed my eyebrows a bit.
BRIAN: Singed your eyebrows?
EMMA: It’s a long story. I’ll spare you the details. Let’s just say I now have a great party trick up my sleeve.
BRIAN: That’s quite an adventure. I can’t say my life has been quite that… eventful. I did go upstate one year.
EMMA: Upstate, wow. You’re such a rebel.
BRIAN: Well, I… I’d like to be.
EMMA: How about we get out of here and go pretend we’re city workers?
BRIAN: What?
EMMA: Yeah we can go buy some hard hats, and stand around doing nothing.
BRIAN: Umm…
EMMA: Come on, live a little!
BRIAN: Oh… Okay.
