In this monologue from the play, “The Dance”, Lucas, a middle school boy, makes a confession to Zoe.
LUCAS: Hey, Zoe. So, um, there’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you. It’s kind of hard to say because, well, I’m not really good at this stuff. But here goes. I think you’re really cool. Like, not just because everyone thinks so, but because you actually are.
You know, in history class, when you answer questions, it’s like you really know what you’re talking about. And not in a show-off way, but in a ‘I-read-books-and-care-about-stuff’ way. And I think that’s… that’s awesome. And the way you’re nice to everyone, even to people who aren’t that popular. It’s like you don’t care what anyone else thinks. That’s really cool.
And there’s something else. Every time I see you, my stomach does this weird flip-flop thing. I think it means… I like you. Like, more than just a friend. Because I can’t stop thinking about you and wondering if you’d ever think about me that way.
So, I was wondering, um, there’s the school dance coming up. And I know it might be a long shot, but would you… I mean, do you want to go with me? As my, you know, date? We don’t have to dance the whole time or anything. We could just hang out, maybe get some punch. But I’d really like it if you went with me.
