In this monologue from the play, “The Ghosts at Sea”, Sam tries to convince his younger friend to take a different path.
SAM: I’m just trying to warn you. Water erodes everything. Being out here, you might like the view, but as you get older… I just don’t want you to live with the regrets I have. Celia, she… put up with it for far too long. I always told her I’d put in my notice. She wanted to have a family, to be together. You can’t be together when you’re always apart. The ocean doesn’t give two sh’ts about you. It’ll try to kill you any chance it gets. It’ll drown you, it’ll eat you, swallow you whole, bones and all. When Celia needed me, I felt torn between two sirens. And I chose the wrong one. I blame myself every damn day for that. It’s too late for me and Celia, but not for you. You’ve got a chance. Don’t end up like me, kid. It’s not worth it. Are you listening?
