In this monologue for young men from the play, “The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me”, Tim tells his father that he’s not going to take over the family business.
TIM: I’m meant for more than this! I don’t want to be like you. I don’t care about the family business. I never did. It was YOUR dream. Why can’t you let me have my own? And don’t say you you want me to now. I know how you really feel. And you never asked, by the way. You never once asked, “What do you want to do when you grow up, Tim?” It was always assumed what I’d do. And maybe that’s stunted my growth because I never thought I could have my own dream, so… I don’t know what it is I want to do. But I know what I don’t want. And that’s this life. Staying here for the rest of my life, wondering ‘what if’. I’d rather come back saying that was a mistake, then never leaving, never trying, and always wondering ‘what if’. You say I’m not ready for the world, but the world’s not ready for me! I’ve got so much to do, and I’ll do it with or without your help.
