In this monologue from the play, “The Telescope Diaries,” a witty, astronomy-loving teen girl navigates the complexities of high school, friendship, and her own heart as she tries to express her feelings to her crush in a universe of awkward encounters and starlit dreams.
CASSIE: (Pointing at a star chart) So, there’s Andromeda, and right there is Cassiopeia. Named after me, Cassie, of course. Did you know Cassiopeia was a queen in Greek mythology? And speaking of stars, I saw that your sun sign is Leo. Sorry I… change subjects pretty quick when I’m nervous. But Leos are confident, kind of like how you aced that math test last week. My sign is Aquarius; we’re known to be… compatible with Leos. It’s like the universe is practically screaming, “Hey, you two should do homework together!” No pressure or anything! When I look through my telescope it’s so amazing what’s out there, far out in space. But sometimes I look at you and think that amazing things might be a lot closer than that. Sorry if that makes this awkward. I’m not good at flirting. I know we’re supposed to be working on our project together. If you want to find another partner, I totally get it. You… feel the same? Wow, that’s… cool. Okay, so now that I’ve broken the ice, I think it’s your turn to say something. (Laughs)
