In this monologue from the play, “Let’s Talk Business”, Norma lays down the rules as she’s been newly promoted.
NORMA: Okay, team, gather round. Let’s talk business. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Norma, the woman who once sold ice to Eskimos, is about to lay down the law. And you’re right.
Rule one: No nonsense. That includes those endless meetings about meetings. If I wanted to run a marathon, I’d buy some sneakers, not sit in a boardroom. And yes, Jerry, that means no more PowerPoint presentations on the ‘synergy of synergizing synergistic synergies.’ I still have nightmares.
Rule two: Honesty. If we mess up, we own it. Remember the ‘glow-in-the-dark’ dog leash fiasco? We told the truth, and guess what? They loved us for it. Turns out, people use them at raves now. Who knew?
And lastly, if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong. This isn’t a library; it’s okay to laugh – even at my expense. Remember when I called our biggest client ‘Mom’ by accident? I thought I’d have to pack my bags, but instead, we landed a bigger contract. She must’ve liked the familiarity!
So that’s it. Keep it real, own your oopsies, and find the funny. If this isn’t your cup of tea, there’s the door. But if you’re with me, let’s make some business magic – and maybe crack a smile or two along the way.
