In this monologue from the play, “Out of Bounds”, Daniel confronts his younger sister Hazel about their coping mechanisms during a rough time in their family life.
DANIEL: You’re stuck in your own little world! You sit there reading for hours, living these imaginary lives in your head, yet you barely look outside. Or inside, for that matter. You make fun of me for following sports. Like it’s a waste of time. But you follow your characters the same way I follow players. I’m not… trying to argue, I just– I want more out of life. And I know you do too. I think we need to wake up and get out more. Stop giving other people’s lives more importance than our own. I’m not saying either of us have had it easy. God knows our mom and dad, they… I get why we’ve both been obsessed with distractions. We haven’t had it easy. But it’s time to look in the mirror and face reality. Because no one’s coming to save us. We have to do that ourselves. And if we make an agreement, a pact, that we’ll look out for each other… I think things could start looking up, ya know?
