In this monologue from the play “The Sandwich”, Norris shares his philosophy on love, life, and existence, with his girlfriend, Maya.
NORRIS: Maya, you know, I’ve been thinking. Love, life, the whole shebang – it’s like making a sandwich. Hear me out. Love? It’s the bread, the foundation. Without it, it’s just… well, a mess on a plate. And life, life is the filling. Sometimes it’s the cheese – simple, satisfying, reliable. Other times, it’s like a weird gourmet thing you tried at that fancy deli – intriguing but confusing as heck.
And existence? Oh, existence is the seasoning. A little bit of salt, pepper, maybe some of that spicy mustard you pretend to like. It gives it all flavor, makes you realize you’re eating something worthwhile. Without it, everything’s just bland. You’re just chewing for the sake of chewing.
But here’s the kicker – it’s all about balance. Too much cheese, and you’re overwhelmed. Too little, and what’s the point? And the seasoning – you’ve got to be careful. Too much, and you’re sneezing more than enjoying.
So, here I am, trying to make the perfect life sandwich. I’ve got my bread, my love – that’s you, by the way, best darn bread in the world. And I’m working on the filling, trying to make it interesting but not too crazy. I’m looking at you, pickled beets.
And the seasoning, well, that’s the everyday stuff, the little moments that add that zing. Like this, right now. Talking about sandwiches and existentialism with the woman I love.
So, what do you say? Ready to help me figure out the rest of this sandwich? Because with you, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the best one I’ve ever made.
