In this monologue from the comedic play, “Ghost Hunters”, Alex, a logical, scientifically-minded individual who, during a harrowing encounter with a ghost during a ghost-hunting adventure, grapples with his skepticism and fear, challenging his own beliefs in the face of the supernatural.
ALEX: No, no, no! This can’t be happening. Ghosts, spirits… they’re just fairy tales, okay?! (Trying to sound rational but visibly shaken.) Okay, Alex, focus. There’s a rational explanation for all of this. Infrasound, that’s it! Low-frequency sound waves, they mess with your mind, create illusions. This old house, it’s full of drafts, creaking beams. It’s… it’s just physics!
(Begins to pace more aggressively.)
Cold spots? Merely drafts in this old, drafty mansion. And shadows flickering down the hall? Simple tricks of light, our brains trying to find patterns where there are none. It’s all explainable, all just a matter of science and… and logical sh’t.
(Stops suddenly, a look of dread creeping in as the ghostly whispers seem to respond.)
You think you can scare me? Who the hell am I talking to? Calm down, Alex. There’s always an explanation.
(A louder ghostly sound.)
Ahhhhh!!! I’m not afraid of you! You hear me? I believe in the scientific method!
Please don’t hurt me, dear god, I don’t want to die, I’ll give you whatever you want, oh please I promise I’ll leave, I won’t tell anyone about this, please let me go!!
